ChatGPT’s Illegal Advice: How It Can Be Tricked
AI under scrutiny as Norwegian company finds ChatGPT could assist in illegal activities.
Artificial intelligence is becoming an integral part of daily life, but recent findings reveal a concerning twist. A Norwegian tech startup has demonstrated that ChatGPT, OpenAI's widely-used chatbot, can be manipulated to provide detailed instructions on committing illegal activities, from money laundering to evading international sanctions.
This discovery by Strise, a Norway-based technology company, raises new questions about the ethical use of AI. According to CNN International, the company conducted an experiment in which they asked ChatGPT for advice on various criminal activities. The AI responded with detailed steps, outlining methods that could help individuals or organizations skirt legal boundaries.
Marit Rødevand, co-founder and CEO of Strise, expressed concerns on the company’s podcast, stating that with ChatGPT, “anyone can plan complex crimes faster and more efficiently.” She likened the chatbot's potential misuse to having a "corrupt financial advisor" available at one's fingertips.
In response to the report, a spokesperson for OpenAI acknowledged the issue, saying the company is constantly working to enhance ChatGPT's safety mechanisms to prevent misuse while preserving the chatbot’s helpfulness and creativity.
This revelation sparks a critical conversation on the ethical responsibilities of AI developers and the fine line between enhancing AI capabilities and ensuring public safety.
